Clare Boswell
Teacher of Chemistry
I started studying Biochemistry at university in 2015. I completed my honours in Biochemistry in 2018 and started on my Masters in 2021. During the time I was working on my Masters in Biochemistry, I decided I needed a part time job. The part time job I chose was teaching Science and Biology a few days a week at a school close to my university. It was difficult at first navigating a teaching role with very little prior experience but after a month or two I fell into the flow of things and that is when my passion for teaching ignited. To have students who say they “hate” Science to later tell me how much they are enjoying the subject was extremely rewarding. It ignited a passion in me to pursue education as a career. I proceeded to complete a postgraduate certificate in education after I completed my Masters in Biochemistry. Ever since then I have been teaching Science and Biology full time and I feel fulfilled every day at school.
The department I worked in is a type of assisted learning centre called the HIVE. It is for students with different styles of learning who do not fit the status quo in regular classes. The smaller groups for learning proved invaluable and any improvement in the individual students felt like a huge victory. I am proud to have been a part of this program for almost 4 years and I wish to incorporate what I learnt there into my career at Avenor College. My favourite line is that all students can learn. To be in a space which is inclusive of all learning styles enriched my teaching ability and I am excited to continue growing at Avenor College.
My passions outside of school involve rock climbing and anything creative, such as sewing and crocheting. I enjoy being out in nature, amongst the mountains. I am eager to explore Romania with all of the beautiful landscapes.
I am looking forward to joining the Avenor team this year. To be able to learn different teaching styles and techniques from teachers at Avenor is exciting. I can’t wait to incorporate what I learn into my everyday teaching. My main focus at Avenor is growing as a teacher to help students not only to do their best in Chemistry but to also expand their passion for Science and to nurture their hunger for knowledge.
