Benjamin Carvell
Teacher of Mathematics
Inspired by my A-level teachers, I have long aspired to a career in education. After completing my BEng in Chemical Engineering at University College London, I initially embarked on a different path, teaching English in Huizhou, China. However, it wasn’t until I turned thirty and completed my PGCE at the University of East Anglia in Norwich that I truly began my journey in teaching mathematics.
My teaching career spans across diverse international settings, each enriching my approach to education. From 2005 to 2009, I taught at Neatherd High School, which laid the foundation for my teaching practice. This was followed by a significant tenure at The British School of Brussels from 2009 to 2015. My journey continued with roles at St Paul’s School in São Paulo (2015-2016) and King’s College Madrid (2016-2018), before spending six years (2018 – 2024) at International College Spain, Madrid. Each experience has deepened my understanding of different curricula and educational environments, allowing me to develop a versatile and dynamic teaching style.
I am deeply committed to making mathematics engaging and relevant to my students. I believe that by connecting mathematical concepts to real-world applications, students can see the value and excitement in the subject. My teaching philosophy revolves around creating a stimulating classroom environment where curiosity and problem-solving are encouraged.
Outside the classroom, I am passionate about immersing myself in new pursuits. Over the years, I have dedicated time to physical activities such as surfing, climbing, salsa dancing, and long-distance cycling. Additionally, I have explored interests like guitar, ukulele, programming, and portraiture. Robotics and AI, as burgeoning fields, are particularly exciting to me, and I look forward to exploring these areas further.
At Avenor College, I aim to inspire students to embrace mathematics with enthusiasm and see its relevance in their everyday lives. I am excited to bring my diverse experiences and passion for teaching to contribute to the school’s vibrant community.
