Cristina Yong
Teacher of English
My name is Ms Cristina Nance Yong and I am thrilled to join Avenor College as your new English teacher. I have been a teacher since 2013, and have encountered many rewarding experiences that have shaped my love and approach towards teaching. I am a firm believer in the pivotal role educators play, not only in imparting knowledge and essential skills, but also in cultivating a passion for learning and critical thinking in others. As an English teacher, I view my role not just as a teacher, but also as a facilitator of communication, expression, and creativity.
From an early age I had a deep interest in both English and learning, having been greatly inspired by some of my own teachers and seeing their enthusiasm for ideas. I knew teaching was to be my main ambition, and I earned my degree in English Literature from the University of York in 2013. I gained an appreciation for the beauty of the language and how we convey thoughts and experiences through written word. After graduating I thereupon began my career in education, where I have aimed to foster a love for the language with my own students.
In terms of professional experience, I have had the privilege of teaching English, General Paper, and Drama Education at several secondary schools in my home country of Brunei. Additionally, I pursued a Master’s Degree, refining my skills in adaptive and engaging teaching tailored for English classrooms. I have taught second language learners of different ages and abilities, contributed to professional development programs, and continuously improved myself as an educator.
Beyond the classroom, I have volunteered in an English camp for primary school students and coached students in debate and public speaking competitions. I have a lot of love for the arts in all their forms, and have participated in several art exhibitions and illustration projects over the years. I enjoy using creativity in and out of the classroom to explore and express wider perspectives. In my leisure time, I indulge my love for nature through backpacking, hiking, and travel.
I am eager to work with you in cultivating a community of young people who strive towards fulfilling the values of Avenor College. It is my hope that we can collaborate on creating learning that challenges, excites, and builds confidence in our students. I am also eager to learn about the culture of the school and the many talents of the students and staff. Thank you once again for welcoming me to your school, and I greatly look forward to getting to know all of you in the coming weeks ahead.
