Colin McKean

Teacher of Mathematics

Prior to becoming a teacher I was a driving instructor near where I lived in the UK. I discovered that I enjoyed working with the young people and they preferred me teaching them to the other members of staff and usually passed tests for the first time with me. Following this I thought that since I enjoyed it and I seemed to be making an impact then perhaps this was the occupation for me so I went back to university and gained a degree in teaching secondary mathematics.

As a teacher I firmly believe that my role in the classroom is to make my subject as interesting as possible as well as making it as applicable to the students lives as possible. If the subject is relevant and interesting then the chances of inspiring the students is far greater than if they believe it is irrelevant. As a result of this belief I tend to try and be creative and if at all possible look at cross-curricular lessons as well as project based learning.

I completed a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Horticulture, then earned a Foundation Certificate (F.Sc) in Computing and Business Management. My academic journey culminated with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in Secondary Mathematics, equipping me with in-depth knowledge of advanced math concepts and effective teaching strategies to inspire and educate secondary school students.

I bring a diverse teaching background with four years in the UK, including my most recent position, a year in Switzerland, a year in the UAE, and six years in Thailand. My experience spans the UK and Canadian (Alberta) curricula, IB Mathematics at higher levels, and various hybrid curricula combining UK and IB approaches, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Outside of volunteering with young people, I am enthusiastic about playing badminton, hiking, and traveling.

At Avenor, I aspire to make a significant impact in mathematics by inspiring students to engage with the subject eagerly and transforming their perspectives on its real-world applications.
