Curriculum
IGCSE – International General Certificate of Secondary Education
The IGCSE level covers the first two years of high school – Grades 9 and 10 in the Romanian system / years 10 and 11 of KS4 in the British system. IGCSE is a two-year course with 8 official examinations held at the end of the cycle*.
Advanced AS/A2
The Advanced Level Examination has two parts: AS and A2. The Advanced level covers the final two years of high school – Grades 11 and 12 in the Romanian system/ Years 12 and 13 of KS5 in the British system – and prepares students for University entrance.
Students will study 3 or 4 subjects at AS and 3 subjects at A2 level. The choice of subjects studied should be closely linked to future university study plans. Students have exams* at the end of each of the two years and only if they pass their AS exams they can continue their studies at A2 level.
*IGCSE and A Level exams are scheduled for May / June and / or October / November of each year. The completed papers are sent to Cambridge where they are marked by specialist examiners. The results are announced officially in mid-August each year.

At Avenor College, we believe that learning happens not only in a traditional setup, but also through experiences taking place outside traditional school framework.
Major changes in the world economy and the business environment will have a profound impact on the way the labor market is structured and on the skills needed for the jobs of the future. The latest reports show that 65% of children entering primary school now will have jobs that have not yet been invented. In a rapidly changing world, the ability to anticipate and prepare students for the skills of the future is essential for any educational institution.
Our “Learning Outside of the Classroom” programme addresses these new trends.
The aims are to:
- develop necessary skills to understand enterprises and running their own businesses
- develop the ability to work in teams
- appreciate the roles and perspectives of a range of people and organisations
- investigate the world of work and entrepreneurial organisations
- develop the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations, using a range of appropriate techniques.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awardis a non-formal education programme that offers young people the opportunity to demonstrate their personal development and progress in an internationally recognised setting. It is a non-competitive, voluntary and balanced programme, which requires a sustained effort throughout its course.
The programme has 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each level having 4 sections: volunteering, physical activities, personal skills and adventure. Within the gold level, there is an additional section: the residential project.
After completing the chosen level, students will attend an official ceremony and receive an internationally recognised certificate acknowledging their efforts. The gold level ceremonies are hosted by Her Majesty Margaret, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, the patron of the programme in Romania.

At Avenor, students receive extensive support and exposure to explore various career paths and university options. This journey begins as early as nursery school with the “Career Week” event and continues through their schooling, particularly during PSHE lessons. As students enter high school, they embark on a series of internships, allowing them to gain direct experience in different career fields. They are guided in crafting their CVs and encouraged to explore areas they are passionate about.
In Grade 10, students participate in psychometric testing during LOTC classes, which helps them understand their strengths and interests as they consider A-Level subject choices and potential career paths. Our goal is to ensure that every student can make well-informed decisions, supported and guided with impartiality.
Throughout Grades 11 and 12, we offer continuous support through our dedicated career guidance team and the Unifrog platform, an online resource for exploring universities and courses. Our experienced career counselors provide personalized guidance for university applications worldwide, supporting our students until they complete high school.

Personal Development
At Avenor College, we believe that learning happens not only in a traditional setup, but also through experiences taking place outside traditional school framework. In such a rapidly evolving landscape, the ability to anticipate and prepare for the skills of the future is essential to any educational institution. We approach this aspect through our activities and programs dedicated to personal development: weekly classes with our school psychologists, annual awards given to students, out-of-class learning programs, but also a program created by school psychologists for parents in the community.
